Diagnostic Futures

Reimagining Diagnostics for Post-Digital Health Futures

A pan-African research, innovation, and computational design initiative building diagnostic intelligence that is locally created, indigenously grounded, and sovereign by design.

🌍

Locally Created

Diagnostic ecosystems built on epistemic repair and culturally embedded AI reasoning models.

🧬

Indigenously Grounded

Computational infrastructures that honour indigenous knowledge systems and cultural semantics.

πŸ”

Sovereign by Design

Rejecting data extraction in favour of local ownership, control, and intellectual futures.

Diagnostic Futures is a pan-African research, innovation, and computational design initiative envisioning a world where diagnostic intelligence is locally created, indigenously grounded, and sovereign by design. We reject historical trajectories where African health data is extracted, modelled abroad, and re-imported as opaque systems.

Instead, we cultivate a diagnostic ecosystem built on epistemic repair, data sovereignty, culturally embedded AI reasoning models, and computational infrastructures that honour indigenous knowledge systems.

Our work spans AI-driven dermatology, maternal screening, mental health profiling, dental diagnostics, vector-borne disease intelligence, community-based triage systems, and graph-reasoning healthcare language models aligned with local clinical logic and cultural semantics.

We integrate high-resolution sensing, multimodal perception models, quantum-inspired learning, and ethnographically validated diagnostic frameworks to build systems that are trustworthy, inclusive, and future-facing.

Philosophy, Foundations, and Futures Thinking

About Diagnostic Futures

Diagnostic Futures is grounded in speculative design methods, critical posthumanism, African futurisms, and decolonial computing. We approach diagnostic systems not as neutral medical devices, but as futures artifacts shaped by sociotechnical power, cultural memory, and computational epistemology.

Indigenous Health Ontologies

Herbal knowledge, cultural semiotics, community triage practices

Advanced Machine Learning

Graph neural networks, multimodal LLMs, knowledge-grounded RAG systems

Systems Thinking

Socio-ecological diagnostics, climate-health signals, migratory disease intelligence

Futures Methodologies

Scenario modelling, speculative prototyping, anticipatory governance

Philosophical Stance

Diagnostics must evolve beyond purely clinical instruments into culturally intelligent infrastructures that negotiate biology, society, environment, and indigenous epistemologies.

This is not merely diagnostic AI.

It is diagnostic sovereignty.

Building Africa's Health Futures

Seven Diagnostic Systems

Each technology integrates core computational methods with cultural and clinical grounding.

1

DermAI-Africa

Multimodal dermatology integrating melanin-aware imaging, indigenous symptom taxonomies, biomarker-informed reasoning, and GNN-based co-morbidity inference.

2

MaternalSense-Q

Maternal screening suite powered by causal language models, culturally validated risk frameworks, wearable-integrated vital streams, and quantum-inspired triage optimisation aligned with local midwifery practices.

3

MindScape Diagnostics

Mental health reasoning using cognitive embeddings, culturally grounded affect models, community psychology frameworks, and dialogic LLM screening agents.

4

OralVision Diagnostics

Dental and oral pathology detection using intraoral imaging, edge-deployed CNNs, community reporting networks, and phytomedicine knowledge graphs.

5

VectorSense

Vector-borne disease intelligence combining acoustic mosquito detection, satellite-derived environmental data, indigenous early-warning heuristics, and federated epidemiological models.

6

NeuroScreen-Africa

Neurocognitive diagnostics leveraging EEG features, speech biomarkers, movement signatures, and African linguistic-cognitive frameworks.

7

Community Diagnostics Hub

Distributed diagnostic platform using village-level federated learning, solar micro-edge devices, indigenous triage protocols, and multilingual conversational interfaces.

Epistemic, Computational, and Clinical

Research Outputs

We produce peer-reviewed papers, datasets, knowledge graphs, models, and speculative prototypes that expand what diagnostic AI can mean for African health futures.

Decolonizing Diagnostics Through Cultural Intelligence

Indigenous Knowledge

African health systems predate biomedical formalization by millennia. Diagnostic Futures integrates these knowledge ecologies through ethnobotanical ontologies, traditional symptom interpretations, proverb-based health communication, community healing logics, and intergenerational diagnostic narratives.

We embed this intelligence using:

Knowledge Graphs Graph Neural Networks Retrieval-Augmented Generation Pipelines Context-Aware Causal Models

Principle: Diagnostic AI must interpret human experience in culturally meaningful ways.

Responsible Data, Responsible Diagnostics

Data Sovereignty

Data sovereignty is a prerequisite for diagnostic sovereignty. We ensure ethical governance and community ownership of health data.
